I have been reading a book titled Switch. It is an excellent book about how change happens and how to get it to happen in a positive way.

A great passage discussed finding “bright spots” and reproducing them instead of searching for solutions to problems. Too often we only discuss, look at, and focus on the problems and we miss out on the solutions that are already around us. Nearly 100% of the time someone is already doing it well. All you have to do is figure out what that someone is doing and copy them.

There is no reason to reinvent the wheel. Find what works and copy it.

At today’s workshop we discussed how different body types respond to different nutrition and exercise strategies. The discussion quickly turned to living in a way that isn’t best represented by your body type. This is a very interesting topic and a constant challenge for most.

Knowing your goal is probably the closest you can get to finding a solution. If your goal matches your body type, you will excel and that is great. When it doesn’t, decide if you enjoy training for your sport or competing in it. If you enjoy the training, don’t worry about the competition and simply enjoy yourself. If you want to perform well in an event that you are not suited for, train for what you are suited for and make minor changes to reach your competition goals.

For example, if a muscular person wants to compete in endurance events, they will perform best by practicing speed work but doing more speed work. If they just enjoy training to go long, they can, but they will not maximise their potential.

These are very interesting things to think about. Thank you to all that came today and created a thought provoking discussion.

As some people know, I am an engineer during the day. Specifically, I design and analyze bridges. The first step in designing a bridge is deciding where the final pavement goes. Once you know that, the length of the bridge, the depth of the bridge, and the foundations are decided for you. When we build, we will start at the foundation and work our way up, but in the beginning we must start with the end in mind.

Designing your workouts or nutrition is the same. You need to start with the final goal and build your program around it. Be sure you do not start building the Golden Gate Bridge when all you needed was a short bridge to cross a stream.
